Mexico Backpacking Route for Beginners (2025)

3 easy routes for first-timers — 2, 3 & 4 weeks. Step-by-step with transport, costs & what to do at every stop.

Mexico is one of the easiest countries in the world to backpack — especially for beginners. ADO first-class buses connect all major cities (online booking, WiFi, AC). Hostels are everywhere. Street food is cheap and incredible. And the 180-day free visa means zero paperwork.

The trick is knowing which route to take. Mexico is enormous — you can't see everything in one trip. These three routes are designed for beginners: safe cities, easy connections, and the best Mexico has to offer.

💡 Golden rule for beginners: Don't try to do too much. Pick 3–5 cities and spend 3–4 days in each. Moving every day is exhausting and expensive. Slow travel = cheaper, deeper, and more fun.

🆕 10 Tips for First-Time Mexico Backpackers

  1. Start in CDMX. It's the easiest entry point — huge international airport, most English speakers, excellent metro, and the best hostel scene in Mexico.
  2. Book your first 2 nights in advance. After that, book as you go. Having a hostel waiting on arrival removes the stress of landing in a new country.
  3. Get a Telcel SIM at the airport OXXO. MXN 200 ($12) for 6GB. Having maps, Uber, and WhatsApp working immediately is a game-changer. SIM guide →
  4. Learn 20 Spanish phrases before you go. "La cuenta" (the bill), "¿Cuánto cuesta?" (how much?), "Sin carne" (no meat), "¿Dónde está...?" (where is...?). Locals love that you try.
  5. Use ADO buses for everything. Safe, comfortable, bookable online. Don't take second-class buses at night — ADO first-class only after dark.
  6. Eat where locals eat. Busy taco stands = fresh food, great taste, safe. Empty tourist restaurants = overpriced, mediocre. Food guide →
  7. Always carry cash. Many taco stands, colectivos, and small shops are cash-only. Withdraw MXN 3,000–5,000 at a time from Santander/HSBC ATMs.
  8. Download offline maps. Google Maps or Maps.me — download city maps before you arrive. Works without data.
  9. Don't compare to the US/Europe. Mexico runs on its own rhythm. Buses might leave late, service is relaxed, and plans change. Go with it — that's the charm.
  10. Get travel insurance. Non-negotiable. SafetyWing $45/month covers everything. One hospital visit without insurance = $500–5,000. Insurance guide →
